While flint, agate, etc are 7 on Moh's hardness scale, obsidian is only 5. BTW stainless steel is also around 5 on the same scale. A good frizzen may actually be harder than obsidian. The synthetic powders energy level per cubic inch is the same as black powder so use the volume measure for all of them. A .45 caliber rifle will use a .440 diameter ball patched with a patch that may be from .010 to .020 thick. Most people find that a .015-=.018 patch works best. I used 60 grains hodgon's triple 7 3f granulation( I don't want to hear it about not using real BP).54 wool wad over powder 80 grains of shot(#6) and a wad over shot At 20 yards the pattern had 30 average hits into what I consider the kill zone.Put the breech in a bucket of water.
